Lenovo's Smart Display with Google Assistant has hit the market. There are two versions of the device, 8-inch and 10-inch, both with full HD screens, and priced at $200 and $250 respectively. "The cost is significantly below an iPad mini and it offers far more functionality than just a digital picture frame or a Bluetooth speaker," said Alan Lepofsky, principal analyst at Constellation Research. Russian Hackers Have Invaded Hundreds of US Utilities: Report
Hundreds of U.S. utilities were penetrated by Russian hackers who could
have disrupted the nation's power grid. The attacks were launched last
year by threat actors sponsored by the Russian government, according to
a report. The hackers used Black Hat tools such as phishing and
waterhole traps to obtain credentials from legitimate users and leverage
them to gain access to the utilities.

Sony's 48MP Sensor Delivers Greater Detail Despite Shrunken Pixels
Mobile phone cameras are about to get a significant performance boost.
Sony on Monday introduced a 48-megapixel sensor for cellphone cameras
that measures less than one-third of an inch diagonally. The sensor is
slated for release in September. To pack that many pixels into such
tight quarters, Sony had to shrink their size to 8 microns. Shrinking
pixel sizes usually results in performance degradation, not improvement.

R.I.P. HipChat and Stride. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, JULY 27 2018 By Anthony Ha

Slack buys HipChat, Twitter loses users and LinkedIn adds voice messaging. Here's your Daily Crunch for July 27, 2018.

1. Slack is buying, and shutting down, HipChat and Stride

Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield said on Twitter that his company is purchasing the IP for both HipChat and Stride from Atlassian, in order to "better support those users who choose to migrate" to Slack.

If your company or team uses HipChat or Stride, it sounds like you've got until February 15, 2019 to switch to over to Slack or another platform.

2. Twitter posts record $100M profit but loses 1M users

Twitter has increased its efforts to find and suspend fake accounts, but the company said that it didn't expect these moves to impact users numbers this quarter.

3. LinkedIn adds voice messaging because we've definitely been clamoring for that

Narrator: We haven't been clamoring for it.

4. WeWork China raises $500M to triple the number of cities it covers

The company entered China two years ago and today it covers Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu with nearly 40 locations. It says it has 20,000 members, and it's also active in Hong Kong (which technically falls under "Greater China").

5. Nintendo's new Labo Vehicle Kit looks like a buggy full of fun

TechCrunch's Devin Coldewey says this isn't just a bargain — it might be "the most humongous" bargain of all time. (Look, he said it, not me!)

6. Facebook also removes 4 Infowars videos, including one it previously cleared

Infowars and its owner Alex Jones are notorious conspiracy peddlers, and this comes days after YouTube did something similar.

7. Amazon's AWS continues to lead its performance highlights

Looking at year-over-year performance over the last six months, Amazon Web Services revenue grew 49 percent. It's now on a run rate that's well north of $10 billion annually.

Facebook stock tumbles. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
THURSDAY, JULY 26 2018 By Anthony Ha

Facebook takes a financial hit over slowing growth, a new study looks at the Trump Administration and H-1B visas, and Tommy Hilfiger announces a smart clothing line. Here's your Daily Crunch for July 26, 2018.

1. Facebook officially loses $123 billion in value

When it comes to market capitalization, Facebook was worth $629.6 billion yesterday. When trading opened this morning, it was worth $506.2 billion. In other words, the company has lost $123.4 billion in value overnight.

The reason for the drop was slowing user growth — the company barely has more daily active users than last quarter, and in Europe, Facebook's user base actually shrank.

2. Indian H-1B applicants face particular scrutiny in Trump's work visa crackdown

A new report from the National Foundation for American Policy sheds light on how the "Buy American and Hire American" executive order from April 2017 has impacted H-1B applicants in the last year.

3. Tommy Hilfiger has launched a ridiculous line of smart clothing that rewards you for wearing it

Tommy Jeans Xplore comes with smart-chip embedded technology. The goal is not to offer access to calls, texts, maps and music controls when you can't get to your phone. Instead, Hilfiger's smart clothing aims to reward you with points for wearing Hilfiger clothing.

4. Spotify hits 180M users but loses €394M in tepid Q2 earnings

Spotify is racing to sign up users before Apple Music can, even at the expense of its finances. According to its second quarter earnings report, it reached 83 million paid subscribers, up 40 percent year-over-year.

5. YouTube punishes Alex Jones' channel for breaking policies against hate speech and child endangerment

Google confirmed it has issued a strike against Infowars founder Alex Jones' YouTube channel for breaking the video platform's policies against child endangerment and hate speech. Four videos were also removed.

6. Twitter 'shadow banning' is Trump's latest social media cause

The president's latest Twitter target is Twitter itself.

7. Enterprise barcode scanner startup Scandit raises a $30 million Series B

"Augmented reality for enterprise" is the sort of phrase that surely hits all of the right neurological pleasure centers for VCs.
