Happy Monday

Facebook’s latest VR play faces stiff competition, Spotify adds more support for podcasts and a new hardware Kickstarter campaign makes some bold claims.

Here’s your Daily Crunch for September 30, 2019.

Not all is predictable on Facebook's social Horizon

Last week, Facebook unveiled Horizon, a massively multiplayer VR world that’s scheduled to launch in 2020. This might seem to play to Facebook’s software strengths, but Lucas Matney argues that the social networking giant may not actually have much of an advantage against smaller game studios.

For example, the team at Against Gravity has already built a network inside VR called Rec Room that's been maturing over the past few years, with rich environments and toolsets for multiplayer interactions. (Extra Crunch membership required.)

Today's Story Highlights

A Peek at Our Wireless Future
Last week I attended a Qualcomm event that took me through the coming
wave of both 5G and WiFi 6 products, touched on the millimeter wave, and
at least spoke to 6G. From this I think I can begin to picture the world
as it will exist by the middle of the next decade, and it is kind of
fascinating. Qualcomm has spent nearly $50B -- yes billion -- advancing
its wireless initiatives.

Spotlight on Cybersecurity Awareness: Own IT, Secure IT, Protect IT
Cybersecurity should be a concern for all businesses -- large and small.
Cybersecurity also should be a concern for consumers, government
agencies, and basically anyone who relies on the Internet in our
increasingly connected world. Among efforts to focus attention on the
threatscape is designating October as National Cyber Security Awareness
Month.

ArcoLinux Eases the Way for the Arch-Curious User
ArcoLinux is a big change for the better for anyone switching from
another Linux distro to the Arch infrastructure. ArcoLinux previously
was known as "ArchMerge Linux." It is a rolling update distribution
based on Arch Linux, but it offers an unusual learning path to make
assimilating into the Arch architecture a more pleasant experience.
ArcoLinux is a continuation of ArchMerge Linux.

Amazon Enlists 30 Partners in Voice Interoperability Initiative
Amazon and dozens of partners have joined in a Voice Interoperability
Initiative. Their aim is to support multiple, interoperable voice
services on a single device so customers can access the one they want by
saying the appropriate wake word. Companies involved in the initiative
will work to accelerate the state of the art in machine learning and
wake word technology.

Xiaomi Unveils Mi 9 Pro 5G and Wraparound-Screen Mi MIX Alpha
Xiaomi has introduced a refresh of the Mi 9 Pro with support for 5G and
a groundbreaking smartphone with a wraparound display. The Mi 9 Pro 5G,
with a base price equivalent to $520, works with 5G offerings of China's
three main carriers -- China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom --
and supports speeds from 1.78 Gbps to 2.02 Gbps, or four times the speed
of typical 4G services.

Art Project Uncovers Bias in AI Training Models
A website created to gather faces for an art project has created a
controversy over the use of AI to classify human beings. The faces
collected at the ImageNet Roulette site are being incorporated into a
work of art in Milan. ImageNet Roulette "acts as a window into some of
the racist, misogynistic, cruel, and simply absurd categorizations
embedded within ImageNet," the creators wrote.

Daily Crunch - Facebook hides Like counts

TechCrunch Newsletter

The Daily Crunch logo

Friday, September 27, 2019 By Anthony Ha

Happy Friday

Facebook tests a new way to resist the lure of Likes, DoorDash admits that it had a big security breach and we have a little problem with the Galaxy Fold. Here’s your Daily Crunch for September 27, 2019.

Facebook tries hiding Like counts to fight envy

It looks like Facebook wants to end the terrible game of chasing Likes, and then the equally terrible feeling of failing.

The experiment starts today in Australia. A post's author can still see the count, but everyone else will only be able to see who Liked a post, not how many Likes total it received.

iPhone 11: Fewer Sales, More Yawns
After having countless conversations with iPhone users in the last few days, I've concluded that Apple will sell loads of these new devices -- but not as many as in the past. There are several reasons I'm expecting a downturn in iPhone sales. Among the top reasons are lack of support for 5G, lack of innovation, and high prices. I wanted to learn how users felt about trading up this year. [More...]
Google's 'Right to Be Forgotten' Approach Wins Nod From EU Court
Google need not comply with the right to be forgotten outside of the European Union, according to a European Court of Justice ruling. A global de-referencing would meet the EU's data protection objectives, the court said, but it found that numerous third states do not recognize the right to de-referencing or have a different approach to that right. I was speaking to an Oracle executive about some of the company's announcements at OpenWorld, and my impression that the company has changed so much that it is difficult to recognize it from the entity it was just a few years ago. On the macro side it's easy to see that Oracle has transitioned from a products company to a subscription company. It uses its own apps in a proof-of-concept mode. [More...]
