Today's Story Highlights

AWS Thinks Inside the Box With Outposts Data Center Revival
Amazon introduced AWS Outposts at its AWS re:Invent conference in Las
Vegas. The new system, which provides AWS-branded boxes for use in
traditional data centers, will allow the company to make advances into
the world of on-premises storage, taking on legacy hardware vendors
including Cisco, Dell, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Outposts
technology can run on rival vendors' data center equipment.

DoJ Takes Down Online Ad Fraud Ring, Indicts 8
The DoJ has revealed an unsealed indictment of eight defendants for
crimes related to their involvement in widespread digital advertising
fraud. The DoJ alleges the eight individuals were behind two global
schemes, 3ve and Methbot, which stole tens of millions of dollars
through a scam that used fake Web traffic and fake websites to reap ad
view revenue from unwitting advertisers.

Amazon's Shift
Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon Web Services, announced that AWS customers
would be off all Oracle databases by the end of 2019 and running on one
of Amazon's database products. This is not the first time the market has
heard something like this, but this time could be different. The
statement comes on the heels of Amazon spending significant coin on
Oracle licenses a few months ago.

Salesforce's Earnings Mystery
My only question about Salesforce's recent revenue announcement is why
the company described the vast majority of its nonprofessional services
revenues as "subscription and support." Proserv revenues were
appropriately small, at $224 million, while subscription and support was
$3.17 billion, or 26 percent more than the same quarter a year earlier.
Nice going, by the way.

The Unsustainability of Black Friday and Cyber Monday for E-Commerce
Black Friday made its debut sometime in the 1960s as the day to help
retailers move from the red to the black in profits. The day-after-
Thanksgiving shopping extravaganza has grown well beyond its roots since
then. Last year, at the peak of Black Friday, shoppers were spending
nearly $1 million per minute. However, the origins of Black Friday were
pre-Internet.

Marriott reveals a massive data breach

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30 2018 By Anthony Ha

Marriott reveals a massive data breach, Instagram lets you share with Close Friends and we have a Startup Battlefield winner at Disrupt Berlin.

1. Marriott says 500 million Starwood guest records stolen in massive data breach

The hotel and resorts giant said in a statement filed with U.S. regulators that the "unauthorized access" to its guest database was detected on or before September 10 — but may date back as far as 2014.

"Marriott learned during the investigation that there had been unauthorized access to the Starwood network since 2014," said the statement. "Marriott recently discovered that an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps towards removing it."

2. Instagram now lets you share Stories to a Close Friends list

The new feature lets you build a single private list of your best buddies on Instagram through suggestions or search, and then share Stories just to them.

3. And the winner of Startup Battlefield at Disrupt Berlin 2018 is… Legacy

At the very beginning, there were 13 startups. After two days of incredibly fierce competition, we now have a winner.

4. Floyd Mayweather and DJ Khaled to pay SEC fines for flogging garbage ICOs

Mayweather received $100,000 from Centra Tech while Khaled got $50,000 from the failed ICO. The SEC cited Khaled and Mayweather's social media feeds, noting they touted securities for pay without disclosing their affiliation with the companies.

5. Sheryl Sandberg knew more of Facebook's work with Definers than she let on

The latest revelation: Sandberg herself directed Facebook's communications team to probe the financial ties of George Soros, left-leaning billionaire and frequent political target of the right. The new reporting cites an email between Sandberg and a Facebook senior executive that was circulated more broadly to senior comms and policy staff.

6. Lawmakers say Amazon's facial recognition software may be racially biased and harm free expression

The letter, signed by eight lawmakers — including Sen. Edward Markey and Reps. John Lewis and Judy Chu — called on Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos to explain how the company's technology works, and where it will be used.

7. DoJ charges Autonomy founder with fraud over $11BN sale to HP

Lynch sold Autonomy, the big data company he founded back in 1996, to computer giant HP for around $11 billion some seven years ago. But within a year, around three-quarters of the value of the business had been written off, with HP accusing Autonomy's management of accounting misrepresentations and disclosure failures.

Editor's Pick: Facebook Staffers Once Brainstormed Ways to Sell User Data: Report

Richard Adhikari
Nov 30, 2018 5:00 AM PT
Facebook at one time considered charging companies for access to its user data, according to a report based on three pages of unredacted material from an 18-page document showing portions of some internal Facebook emails, mainly from about 2012 to 2014. The documents are linked to a lawsuit, Six4Three LLC v. Facebook Inc., alleging that Facebook's data policies were anticompetitive. [More...]

The Consumer IoT's Boon for the Insurance Industry
Smart home and consumer IoT solutions promise significant opportunities
for the insurance industry in terms of reducing costs, alleviating
risks, deepening customer engagement, and creating new services and
revenue streams. There are many barriers ahead to overcome, but given
the tremendous upside, insurance companies have begun attacking these
challenges with a multi-tiered strategy.

Tesla vs. Jaguar: The First Real Electric Car Track Shootout
I'm a longtime Jaguar fan. I've owned a ton of them over the years, and
I've had both good and bad experiences with the cars. Currently I own
two -- a 1970 XKE and a 2014 F-Type -- and they are about to get a
sibling. I've ordered a new Jaguar I-Pace, which is the first legitimate
challenger to Tesla, which surprised the automotive industry much like
Apple surprised the mobile phone industry.
