Today's Story Highlights

Uber Wants to Get Off Google's Maps
Ride-sharing company Uber reportedly has submitted a bid of up to $3
billion to acquire Nokia's Here maps service. Several Here suitors have
surfaced since April, when Nokia made known its intent to sell the
service, including Facebook, Google, and a consortium of German
automakers and Chinese search engine Baidu. The biggest threat to Uber's
bid may be that consortium.

Users Choose to Wear Blinders, Facebook Suggests
Facebook, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, conducted a
study on the diversity of news and opinions posted by members of the
network, in an effort to determine whether its manipulation of News Feed
algorithms could be responsible for creating an echo chamber of
viewpoints. Users themselves are to blame if all they're exposed to is
preaching to the choir, the study found.

Wild Salesforce Speculation
The blogosphere lit up last week after rumors surfaced that Salesforce
was working with unnamed bankers on a possible merger. It seemed
Salesforce was in play, and my colleagues and I went into overdrive
speculating about who the suitor might be, what the striking price would
be, and whether it was a good idea to do the deal. Of course, as a
public company, Salesforce in theory could be bought.

The Cloud's Threatening Legal Storm
With the ever-increasing use of the cloud by more and more businesses,
there is good reason to be concerned about legal risks, which are an
inherent part of the cloud. The term "cloud" may be relatively new, but
the concept of remote computing started more than 60 years ago, when
Dartmouth University first launched "time-sharing." The remote computing
risks have not abated.

Federal Appeals Court Rules NSA's Phone Data-Vacuuming Illegal
A U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled, in essence, that the NSA's collection
of metadata concerning Americans' communications is illegal. The court
vacated U.S. District Judge William Pauley's December 2013 ruling in
ACLU v. Clapper , and remanded the case to the lower court. "The Second
Circuit found the government incorrect in many of its arguments," said
ACLU Staff Attorney Patrick Toomey.

5 Ways to Stop Stressing Out Your Customers
Company executives -- especially customer service leaders -- will tell
you that the customer is the most important person on the planet and
that the company is focused on making the customer happy with a laser-
like intensity. Take a look at a typical mission statement -- it's all
about the customer. Yet many customers would rather have a root canal
than contact a company for support.

Discover Card Completes Apple Pay
Discover last week announced that it would allow its cardmembers in the
United States to make contactless payments in participating stores
through Apple Pay. Users will be able to pay for goods and services
beginning this fall via iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, as well
as the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. With this new partnership, Apple Pay
will have support from all the major U.S. credit card companies.
