A Glimpse Into the 5G Wireless World

Hollywood Hospital Hacked Back to Paper Age
Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center last week revealed its computer
systems were offline after a ransomware attack scrambled the data on its
systems. Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts data and system
files on a computer and demands a ransom payment to unscramble the
files. Since the attack, HPMC medical personnel have resorted to faxes
and handwritten charts to perform their tasks.

Groupon Flies High on Alibaba Investment
Groupon's stock slipped a little on Wednesday, following Tuesday's
dramatic 40 percent spike on the news that Alibaba had purchased about a
5 percent stake in the company. Alibaba last week disclosed in a filing
with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had bought about 33
million shares of Groupon. The disclosure boosted shares of Alibaba, as
well as the struggling Yahoo, which owns a stake in Alibaba.

I was gobsmacked when I read this in Robert Gordon's The Rise and Fall
of American Growth: The U.S. Standard of Living Since the Civil War :
"Electric light, the first reliable internal combustion engine, and
wireless transmission ... were all invented within the same three-month
period at the end of 1879." It's a book full of surprises emanating from
an analysis of major inflection points.

Report: Apple Moving Quickly to Sell New iPhone, iPad Models
Apple will begin selling new models of its iPad tablets and iPhones in
mid-March, according to a report published last week. It will debut a 4-
inch iPhone, called the "iPhone 5se," as well as a new iPad Air at a
March 15 event, followed by a retail and online sales launch three days
later, said the report. Apple is not expected to offer its usual
preorder sales event.
