Today's Story Highlights

Intel's Kaby Lake Chip Promises Deeper Internet Immersion
Facing a shrinking market for personal computers and a stalled market
for tablets, Intel on Tuesday unveiled its 7th-generation processors,
code-named "Kaby Lake," which deliver more speed and power than its 6th-
generation chipsets, while improving battery efficiency. Intel has
positioned the new Kaby Lake chipsets as ideal for the immersive
Internet.

Zen's Place in the Computing World
AMD, which has been clawing its way out of the doldrums, recently
showcased its octacore, 16-thread Summit Ridge desktop processor
featuring its Zen core in a performance match-up against Intel's
octacore Broadwell-E Core i7-6900K CPU. The two similarly configured
processors were locked at 3 GHz for the test, in which they ran the
multithreaded Blender rendering application.

Election Season Spawns Scams With Political Twist
Dirty tricks during political campaigns are nothing new, but the
Internet and the proliferation of mobile devices have allowed tricksters
to up their games a notch. It came to light last week, for example, that
Donald Trump's campaign app was hoovering the address books on his
supporters' phones. Trump's app wasn't doing anything illegal. It wasn't
even trying to hide what it was doing.

Nextdoor Tackles Racial Profiling at Street Level
Nextdoor last week rolled out to all 110,000 of its neighborhoods a new
form-based process for making crime and safety reports. Implementation
of the tool reduced incidents of racial profiling by 75 percent in areas
where it was tested, according to CEO Nirav Tolia. Some Nextdoor members
had begun using the site to post problematic messages targeting racial
minorities.

Snazzier Fitbits Sport Beefed-Up Feature Sets
Fitbit on Monday announced two new fitness trackers with sleeker looks,
more durable construction and greater data-gathering capabilities. The
Fitbit Charge 2, priced at $149.95, features continuous heart-rate
tracking. It uses the data to generate a cardio fitness score and
provides guidance for improving it over time. The Charge 2 displays
real-time exercise stats.

StandWithLeslie and Obliterate Internet Trolls
I think there's a legitimate argument for removing one category of folks
from the gene pool, because they spend the little time they are given on
Earth making other folks' lives miserable. Back when I was playing MMOs,
some twisted folks -- known as "griefers," would lie in wait to mug
lower level characters and find creative ways to destroy the fun in a
game, often eventually killing it.

The Peppermint Twist Is Still Cool
The Peppermint operating system is built around a concept not found in
most Linux distros. It is a hybrid combination of traditional Linux
desktop applications and cloud-based infrastructure. Peppermint 7 is a
lightweight distribution based on Ubuntu 16.04. The key to its process
of linking full desktop functionality to cloud apps is an in-house
developed application dubbed "Ice."

Today's Story Highlights

Europe Duns Apple for $14.5B in Illegal Tax Breaks
The European Union on Tuesday nailed Apple with a $14.5 billion bill for
back taxes. "The European Commission has today has adopted a decision
that Apple's tax benefits in Ireland are illegal," said EC Competition
Chief Margrethe Vestager. Tax breaks Ireland granted to Apple for more
than two decades artificially reduced Apple's tax burden, in breach of
European Union rules, she explained.

Federal Agencies Told to Share Their Software
U.S. government agencies have been directed to share with each other
software code that has been developed on a customized basis. Much of the
code involves commercial vendor offerings. In addition to interagency
sharing, government units are required to share portions of their
customized code with the general public, a move characterized as
promoting an open source approach.

HPE, HP Sued for Elbowing Out Older Employees
HPE and HP are facing a potential class action lawsuit brought earlier
this month by four former employees. The companies engaged in widespread
age discrimination during a restructuring of the legacy computer and
printer manufacturer, according to their complaint. HP from 2012 to 2015
made a series of discriminatory job cuts involving tens of thousands of
workers, the suit alleges.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83852.html

Dark Days Ahead for Companies That Fail Customers
It's 2016, and there are more ways to connect than ever before. You
would think customer service and customer care would be at an all-time
high. Why, then, do so many customers feel they are at an all-time low?
Customers are frustrated. Companies are using social networks to provide
customer service, but they are failing. Companies don't seem able to put
the pieces together.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83848.html

American Breaks People
It's easy to lose sight of people in a CRM discussion, focusing instead
on the great technology and what it does under optimum circumstances. We
should keep the customer in mind at all times, however, for without them
what are we? Forgetting the customer is dangerous both for customers and
vendors in this social age. Far from being a universal good, automation
can obstruct human interactions.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/83851.html

Defense Department Drifts Toward Commercial Cloud
The U.S. Department of Defense plans to spend nearly half a billion
dollars on a project that is designed to further the incorporation of
commercial cloud capabilities into DoD's information technology
operations. Vendors have been asked to submit bids for the project,
known as "Mil-Cloud 2.0." The procurement is one element of a
comprehensive DoD strategy for expanding cloud operations.

Amazon Sets Up New Auto Research Shop
Amazon on Thursday launched Amazon Vehicles, a research and community
site that will let users compare new and used cars, and shop for auto
parts, among other things. The site will let customers view everything
from specs, images, videos and customer reviews of thousands of brand
new to classic vehicles, potentially offering stiff competition to
Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader.com.

What Dropbox didn't disclose: It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31 2016 By Darrell Etherington

The Daily Crunch 08/31/16

Dropbox tells some, but not all, in a 2012 security breach, and Nest's bird has flown. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for August 31, 2016. Also if you're picking sides between Uber and Google, consider that Google builds huge agile dog-like robots, at least until it finds a buyer for Boston Dynamics.

1. Dropbox drops the ball on security

Wow, 60 million is a lot of user credentials floating around, Dropbox. The worst part is, it happened four years ago in 2012, when an employee's weak password led to the leak. Dropbox made a semi-disclosure at the time, but did not come anywhere close to revealing the extent of the leak, which means 60 million user email logins have been floating around on the dark web unbeknownst to users since then. Oof. At least the passwords the hackers got were hashed and salted, and it looks like that security measure wasn't cracked.

2. Uber and Google gear up for a fight

Uber and Google are on this sort of slow-mo collision course that is ramping up, as Google prepares to extend its Waze-based peer-to-peer car sharing service to all users across the San Francisco area. Waze opened up its service in Israel previously, and said this was part of its eventual plan, but the pilot is about to expand to the general public, which means we'll start to see some real competition between the two tech titans. Ding ding.

3. Leaving the Nest

Google's Nest lab is also in a kind of slow-mo process, but this one is more like a gradual collapse. After founder and CEO Tony Fadell departed in June, it was clear things were changing. Now led by Marwan Faraz, the smart home company is losing a group of engineers to Google's Internet of Things platform team, which is being led by Android SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer. Everyone's staying well within the larger Alphabet org, but it might be a sign of greater business unit rationalization to come for Mountain View.

4. Cars without humans at the wheel are coming to a street near you

It's almost time: You're probably going to pull up to a car where there's no one technically driving eventually, but two states are in a legislative race to allow testing of fully self-driving vehicles without a human safety minder at the wheel. Michigan seems especially hot on the idea – the state has a hearing today to let the public chime in on its bipartisan bill, which would allow testing on all state roads.

5. Google now searches inside apps

Apps are islands unto themselves, but Google is offering a kind of ferry service between those islands via its search app on Android. Google now has an "In Apps" search mode on the platform, which allows you to look inside your silos for contacts, messages, music and way more. At launch, it only works with Gmail, Spotify and YouTube, but Google is looking to ramp up app indexing to give it much further reach in the near future.

6. Another swing and a miss for Theranos

Theranos borked it again, this time with its new Zika test. The company proudly debuted said product in the wake of its ongoing implosion around prior blood tests, but the FDA found flaws in that, too, and now it's withdrawn its request. Womp to the very loud womp.

7. iPhone likely to get 256GB of storage and Lightning EarPods

The upcoming iPhone 7 is widely expected to ditch the headphone jack, and a new leak suggests we'll see a boost in the top-end capacity to 256GB, as well as Lightning EarPods included in the box, as well as an additional 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter for your other headphones. If true, it really seems like Apple wants to make the transition as smooth as possible in this brave new 3.5mm-less world.
