Gawker Founder Sets Personal Bankruptcy Wheels in Motion
Gawker founder Nick Denton earlier this week said that he filed for
personal bankruptcy protection after exhausting his appeals to stave off
collection of damages resulting from a defamation and invasion of
privacy lawsuit brought by professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. The
filing followed a Florida court's rejection of Denton's appeal to block
Hogan from collecting a $140 million jury award.

Apple Might Need to Think Different About TV
Apple's tough negotiating stance apparently has hobbled its efforts to
bring entertainment industry companies on board with its planned
streaming TV service. Talks with Disney, 21st Century Fox and CBS
reportedly have fallen through. Had the entertainment and cable TV
industry given in, Apple's demands would have turned current practices
topsy-turvy.

The Maturation of the Cloud ERP Market
Oracle's acquisition of NetSuite is a clear indication that the rapid
adoption of cloud alternatives to traditional on-premises applications
is shifting from front-office customer relationship management to back-
office enterprise resource planning solutions. Now, the question will be
whether Oracle can buy its way into a leadership position in this
emerging marketplace.

Nintendo Investors' Futile Hunt for Pokémon Go Profits
Nintendo investors who thought they would score big returns after the
successful launch of Pokémon Go found that actual profits were more
elusive than the colorful characters. Nintendo last week made it
painfully clear that The Pokémon Co. and Niantic were far better
positioned than it was to reap financial rewards. Much of that revenue
potential lies in a wealth of in-app purchases.

Time Warner Bets Heavily on Hulu
Time Warner on Wednesday announced it has entered an agreement to buy a
10 percent stake in online-streaming service Hulu, in a bid to leverage
its lineup of television and film content on multiple viewing platforms.
With the new investment, Time Warner will join a joint venture that
includes some of the nation's largest media companies, including The
Walt Disney Co., 21st Century Fox and Comcast.

Heating Up the Platform Wars
We've seen a rapid progression from conventional licensed software to
cloud-based solutions that sell for a song -- and in theory could sell
through barter at some point. I am not a big fan of zero marginal cost
economics, in which prices drop to zip because buyers take into account
only the cost of the good and not the time, effort, and other resources
that went into making it No. 1.

Uber's China Strategy Shifts Into Reverse
Didi Chuxing on Monday announced a historic deal to acquire the Chinese
ride-sharing operations of rival Uber, which threw in the towel after
years of unsuccessful efforts to grow its business in what may prove to
be the world's most challenging technology market. Under the agreement,
Didi Chuxing acquired all of Uber China's assets, including its brand,
data and business operations.

UK Greenlights Amazon's Drone Delivery Tests
Amazon, which has appealed to U.S. regulators for years for permission
to test package delivery with aerial drones, last week announced a new
partnership with the UK government to launch a pilot program there. A
cross-government team, supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, has
granted Amazon permission to begin testing three critical performance
factors.

Salesforce Gets a Grip on Quip
Salesforce has agreed to acquire Quip, Quip CEO Bret Taylor and Head of
Product Kevin Gibbs announced Monday. Quip lets users manage live
documents throughout the collaboration process. The deal is worth about
$582 million, according to a Salesforce filing with the U.S. Securities
and Exchange Commission. Quip provides a chat feature that's built into
every document and spreadsheet.

Federal Agencies Seek Cyberdefenders
The U.S. government is in the process of hiring a small army of IT
specialists to bolster its efforts to protect data held at federal
agencies from cybersecurity threats. The feds hired 3,000 new
cybersecurity and IT professionals in the first six months of the
current fiscal year. The hiring spree is just one component of a "first
ever" Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Strategy.

SolarCity Deal Would Take Tesla Where No Company Has Gone Before
Tesla Motors has announced that it has reached an agreement to purchase
SolarCity. The deal could create the world's first vertically integrated
sustainable energy company. The merger would drive efforts to develop
rooftop solar systems, and better storage batteries for homes and
businesses, as well as electric vehicles. It would, in essence, tie
together Elon Musk's sustainable energy businesses.

Why 1 Billion iPhones Sold Matters
Sales of the iPhone for the current quarter may be down, but sales for
the decade are up, way up. Apple last week announced that it had sold
its billionth iPhone, a historic feat for a consumer electronics product
from a single vendor. "We never set out to make the most, but we've
always set out to make the best products that make a difference," said
Apple CEO Tim Cook.
