U.S. transportation authorities ban computers on certain flights A new order from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration is banning large electronics from cabin baggage, including laptops, tablets, cameras and more, on flights originating from Middle Eastern and African countries on flights operated by airlines based in those nations. The order does not apply to U.S. airline flights from these same airports, and the U.S. authorities say it's based on intelligence information. It's being perceived by some as an extension of Trump's existing Muslim immigration ban, however. Twitter launching live video API Twitter might end up becoming a service provider for live video broadcasts, a business which might actually override its main business over time if it can continue to demonstrate that its live broadcast services can hold up to heavy traffic. 3. YC W17 Demo Day 1 startups Y Combinator's hosting its demo days for its Winter 2017 class, and 52 startups launched on day one. Check out the New 52 (obscure DC Comics meta-arc reference). 4. Apple now has a red iPhone Apple pulled a mid-year refresh of its latest iPhone, but it's just a color change: There's now a red iPhone, which is actually a Product RED thing, so part of your purchase price will go towards charity fighting HIV and AIDs. Just wish they'd gone all-in with a red front face, too. 5. Meanwhile there's a new Apple video app Every now and then Apple releases a new app, and next up is Clips, a short video editing tool designed to make it easy to create Snapchat style content for various social networks, and for iMessage. It sounds more promising than Music Memos, but you'll have to wait until April to find out for sure. 6. Google pulls ads from more content in a bid to please its major brand advertisers YouTube advertising is in a bit of a pickle; the social video platform can't stop ads from big brands from showing up next to content that many may consider offensive. It's now expanding its efforts to protect brand value – the only value that matters, let's be honest. 7. The first passenger pod for a commercial hyperloop system is now being built Hyperloop Transportation Technologies is building the first passenger capsule that it intends to use in a final commercial hyperloop system. That pod won't be completed until 2018, and it's not clear where it'll be put into service, but the company wants to get an early jump on making sure a full-scale person pod is safe and ready to travel. |
