IBM Aims to Harness Internet of Things
IBM on Tuesday announced it will spend $3 billion over a four-year
period on a new Internet of Things unit involving thousands of
consultants, developers and research staff. The company intends to
establish an IoT Cloud Open Platform for Industries, which will extract
data for business intelligence, and set up a Bluemix IoT Zone, which
will help leverage that data for app design.

Amazon Wants to Help Clean Your House
Amazon on Monday launched a new marketplace for professionals who can
help with everything from basic home cleaning to skilled labor,
including electric, plumbing and appliance installation. Amazon Home
Services enlists professionals who have been prescreened through
background checks and are officially licensed and insured, and it
guarantees service satisfaction.

The Futility of the Strong Password Solution
After experiencing a data breach, most companies take a number of
measures to strengthen security, including advising users to change
their passwords and to make them strong. Although it stopped short of
confirming anything, Amazon-owned Twitch last week notified users that
its network might have been hacked and that some user account
information might have been exposed.

Shrinking ERP to Grow It
The surround strategy for legacy ERP is real. It's been going on for
several years, and if I was a legacy ERP vendor I would be concerned.
The strategy refers to the idea of leaving legacy ERP in place while
implementing cloud ERP to handle specialized parts of a business, like a
region with currency conversion issues, subscriptions, or something like
that.

Proposed Amendments to US Cybersecurity Laws Under Scrutiny
The White House in January proposed updates to the Computer Fraud and
Abuse Act that have stirred controversy within the cybersecurity
industry. "If the proposed legislation were to be enacted, it would
certainly have a chilling effect on cybersecurity research," said Chris
Doggett, managing director at Kaspersky Lab North America.

BlackBerry's Q4 Profit Small Comfort as Revenue Slips
BlackBerry last week reported fourth-quarter revenue of $660 million --
well under analyst expectations, but enough to put the company back in
the black. Approximately 42 percent of that revenue came from hardware
sales, about 47 percent from services, and about 10 percent from
software. BlackBerry declined to comment on which areas of the
accounting sheets reassured its leadership and investors.

Mobile Banking on a Tear, Says Fed
The Federal Reserve Board has released its fourth annual study of
consumers' mobile commerce behaviors. The report shows a continued boom
in banking on mobile phones and other devices rather than at a teller
desk. Central to the report's findings is the growing number of "banked"
consumers -- those with full access to bank services -- who also use a
smartphone.
