Today's Story Highlights

Three Charged in Hacking Case That Spammed 60M
Federal prosecutors in New Jersey on Tuesday charged three men in a $2
million identity theft scheme to hack corporate computer systems and
blast spam messages to more than 60 million people. The defendants face
up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines on wire fraud charges,
and up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines on email and
computer conspiracy charges.

WhatsApp Brouhaha Breaks Out in Brazil
A Brazilian judge on Thursday lifted the ban a different judge had
imposed on WhatsApp hours earlier, according to reports. It did not seem
reasonable to affect millions of users to penalize Facebook, WhatsApp's
owner, for failing to cooperate with judicial rulings, the judge
reportedly said, suggesting that the imposition of a larger fine would
have been more appropriate.

CRM to Get Emotional in 2016
Temkin Group on Tuesday predicted 2016 will be the year of emotion.
That's one of 11 customer experience trends to watch for in the coming
year, managing partner Bruce Temkin wrote in a blog post. "Emotion is
the component of customer experience that has the largest impact on
loyalty, but it is also the area where companies are least adept and
often seemingly ignore," he wrote.

Feds Give Commercial Off-the-Shelf IT a Closer Look
Federal information technology purchasing often involves large amounts
of money based on the small print of acquisition requirements. Arcane
procurement language seemingly can have a big impact on transactions.
For IT vendors, provisions of recent legislation are prime examples of
why it pays to scrutinize every line of the laws and regulations
pertaining to federal acquisition programs.

Seattle Lets Ride-Sharing Drivers Unionize
The Seattle City Council this week approved an ordinance that will allow
drivers for Uber and Lyft to form unions, becoming the first U.S. city
to pass such legislation. The City Council voted 9-0 in favor of the
ordinance, which doesn't require the mayor's signature to pass. Drivers
for Uber and other ride-sharing networks are classified as independent
contractors, like taxi drivers.

Year-End Intelligence
There's always an aphorism about Santa, stockings and year-end funding
news, but I am tired of them so I'll let you imagine one. However, the
funding news is so good from so many sources that I thought it
worthwhile to mention a few items -- there are patterns emerging. First,
Salesforce bought MinHash. That's not a funding event proper, but it
does provide some modicum of cash to the founders.

UK Police Pinch Suspect in VTech Hack
UK police have arrested a 21-year-old man as part of their investigation
into last month's hack on VTech's systems. The man was arrested in
Bracknell, 30 miles west of London, on suspicion of unauthorized access
to a computer to facilitate the commission of an offense and suspicion
of causing a computer to perform functions to secure or enable
unauthorized access to a program or data, police said.

Disgruntled Yahoo Investors Suggest Different Paths Forward
Two Yahoo investors, acting independently, have publicly called for
radical changes or a potential sale of the firm. Both Canyon Capital
Advisors and SpringOwl Asset Management apparently were unappeased by
last week's announcement that Yahoo would spin off its core Internet
business. Canyon Capital Advisors on Friday sent a letter urging Yahoo
to find a buyer for its core Internet businesses.
