| Amazon's Prime Day is now the preeminent celebration of North American consumerism. Also, vacuum tubes for large transit are officially a thing. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for July 12, 2017. 1. Amazon's Prime Day sold a lot of Echo Dots and Instant Pots Amazon Prime Day resulted in a lot of sales for the ecommerce giant, which says it beat its previous single day sales record by 60 percent. Service connections early on were a sign that it was big, but now we know it was actually the biggest. The top sellers were the Echo Dot, which was discounted beyond its usual cheap price to only $34.99. The larger Echo also got lots of sales, and the Instant Pot Duo was a big third-party hit, too. Way to go all of us, great consumerism! 
2. PayPal broadens Apple payment partnership Apple is expanding its partnership with PayPal for digital payments to more markets, which is a smart move if it wants to reach customers who don't necessarily want to plunk down a credit card to buy in-app doodads and apps. 3. Hyperloop One has successfully tested its full-scale system Hyperloop One's full-scale system had its first test at the company's Nevada track site, which means it was able to run in total vacuum at a top speed of 70 mph. That's hardly the top speed it'll aim for in production (the Dubai project has a projected speed of 500 mph), but everybody's gotta start somewhere. 4. Apple's smart home in-store experiences will aim to show HomeKit's worth It's hard to replicate a smart home within a retail store, but Apple is doing its best to approximate the experience with its new HomeKit interactive experience displays. These feature large displays that replicate typical home setups, with demo iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches to show you how Home control works on those devices. 5. Overwatch is getting a sports league with city-based teams Sports are now games, games are now sports. This is the final transition. Next comes scholarships (we may already have those, I have no idea). 6. Vizio files suit against LeEco Remember when LeEco was going to buy Vizio? And then that fell through, but the two were still going to partner? Neither of those things are happening. Instead, Vizio is suing LeEco, claiming it never had the money to acquire the TV maker and was instead posturing for the sake of convincing people it was solvent. 7. Waymo's panda cars are being retired The adorable Waymo Firefly, which gained internet fame mostly for looking like a panda from the front, is being phased out in favor of Google's new autonomous test cars, the converted Chrysler Pacifica. So long, little guy – you will be missed. |
