| The FCC outlines the death of net neutrality, Facebook and MLB start streaming, and Uber goes to truck town. 1. The FCC puts forward rules to end net neutrality The FCC has proposed its rules to reverse landmark net neutrality protections put in place under President Obama. This doesn't mean net neutrality is dead, but it does mean net neutrality advocates are in for a hell of a fight. FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn said on stage that ordinary people can help by commenting on the proposed regulations and being very loud about displeasure with the changes. 
2. Chrome heads to VR VR on mobile in Android's built-in Daydream platform is getting a lot more robust. You can basically navigate the whole experience in VR now, and there's also a full-fledged Chrome browser in the next version. Closer than ever to the day we live entirely in virtual environs. 3. Spotify buys AI startup for better recommendations Spotify has acquired AI startup Niland, which uses AI to improve search and recommendations for music. That has obvious implications at Spotify, and there's a very good chance this was essentially an acquihire to pick up some of that good, good super-rare AI engineering expertise. 4. Facebook and MLB team up for live streaming Facebook and the MLB are going to stream 20 live regular season games to the Facebook MLB page, broadcasting the entire game via streamed video. It's a shot across the bow at Twitter, which seemed to be hoping to become the new king of professionally produced social live video. 5. Zomato suffered a large hack but it's not the worst Zomato suffered a data breach that affected 6.6 million passwords (hashed) along with email addresses, but it did not lose credit card info. Zomato also managed to get the stolen information taken down from sale on the condition that it spin up a bug bounty program. 6. Step into Star Wars Star Wars movies you can interact with? That might become something real thanks to Google's Seurat mobile VR graphics rendering tech. This makes it possible to achieve cinematic quality visual effects in even low power VR, and ILMxLAB is teaming with Google to demonstrate the power of the tech. 7. Ford rolls out its first OTA update Ford has begun updating SYNC 3 vehicles with CarPlay and Android Auto, and some of the updates will be going out over-the-air, like Tesla's often do. That's a first for Ford, and a sign that car owners with Food vehicles can expect more improvements through the life of their car. |
