Slack raises from SoftBank at $5 billion valuation SoftBank continues to upend the VC landscape with huge investments, this time in Slack. It's put in $250 million in a new round for the enterprise communication tool which values Slack at $5 billion. SoftBank's not letting its massive $100 billion investment fund burn a hole in its pocket, that's for sure. 
2. The Handmaid's Tale brings Hulu Emmy success Hulu managed to pick up the first ever Emmy award win for Best Drama for a streaming series for The Handmaid's Tale, the adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian portrait with depressing relevance. It's wonderful and you should watch it. 3. Disrupt SF 2017 Hackathon also awards a prize It's not an Emmy, but hack team Alexa Shop Assist walked away with $5,000 for their creation at this year's Disrupt SF 2017 Hackathon. The winner's project lets you ask Alexa where you can pick up something you want to buy from a local retail store, rather than online, and it provides product recommendation help. 4. Waymo wants to put off the Uber self-driving tech trial Waymo isn't crazy about going to trial with Uber on October 11 as planned. The company succeeded in making sure the suit sees a court, rather than arbitration, but it now wants more time to review new devices and information provided via discovery. 5. Google's Tez is a mobile payments app that uses audio Google has a new way to spend and share money, via Tez, a mobile wallet app for India that allows payment via Audio QR, which uses ultrasonic frequencies to send money between devices. Chromecast actually uses a similar method for handshaking without Wi-Fi. 6. Porsche's first electric car looks like a winner The Mission E all-electric four-door sports car from Porsche is set to go on sale in 2019, starting at around $80,000. It looks like strong competition for the Model S, especially if its specs stay the same when it hits the road. 7. GoCardless CEO on recovery Steve profiles GoCardless CEO Hiroki Takeuchi, who recently lost the use of his legs – most likely permanently – in a car accident that left him fully paralyzed from the chest down. It's a story of recovery and how personal challenge can shape you as an entrepreneur. |
