Today's Story Highlights

Diane Greene to Lead Google Into Cloud Business Fray
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced the appointment of Diane Greene,
cofounder of VMWare and current Google board member, to lead its cloud
business. Google will acquire Bebop, another firm founded by Greene.
Bebop is a new development platform that makes it easy to build and
maintain enterprise applications. Bebop's team will help Google provide
integrated cloud products at every level.

Microsoft Doubles Down on Open Source
Microsoft this week announced at its Connect conference in New York City
an expansion of its developer tools with a focus on Linux, Android and
open source. The move is an effort to help close the gap between
Microsoft's developer platforms and the open source world. The programs
include free access for developers who are getting started, updates to
.NET, and the renaming of Visual Studio Online.

The Lego-ization of Software, or the Rise of Snap-On SaaS
Here's a bold proclamation: Internally-developed IT software is a
decelerator to business. When the need is specialized and you have a
fully staffed IT team, there's a natural temptation to put everyone to
work on a custom development project. For today's companies, however,
this is often the slowest and most expensive path to the market, and it
isn't necessary.

Telegram Shutters 78 ISIS Channels
The team behind the Telegram secure messaging app on Wednesday reported
that it had shut down 78 channels, across 12 languages, used by ISIS and
its supporters. However, the app's privately used channels weren't
affected by the sweep. After the attacks on Paris last weekend, the
Telegram team learned that the terrorist group had been communicating
openly on its secure messaging platform.

Google Tears Down App Walls
Google on Wednesday began streaming content from certain mobile apps in
its search results, with no download required. The company is working
initially with nine partners, including Weather, Chimani, My Horoscope,
New York Subway and Hotel Tonight. Technology Google acquired when it
purchased Agawi lets it stream virtual versions of mobile apps. Apps no
longer need to have related websites.

Investors Buying In Following Salesforce's Q3 Stunner
Salesforce shares rose to an all-time high Thursday, after the company
reported better-than-expected Q3 revenue and raised earnings estimates
for 2016. Salesforce reported earnings of 21 cents a share and a revenue
increase of 24 percent to $1.71 billion, compared with a year ago. The
company is on pace to become the fourth largest enterprise software
company in the world.

Halo Makes Month for Xbox One
The NPD Group last week announced that Halo 5: Guardians set atop the
gaming charts for October, despite its Xbox One exclusivity. The latest
installment of the long-standing sci-fi shooter has given the Xbox One a
much-needed boost, but Microsoft's latest console is still well behind
rival Sony's PlayStation 4. Overall, the console market saw marginal
gains in October.
