Amazon plans a Whole Foods expansion

THE DAILY CRUNCH
MONDAY, DECEMBER 31 2018 By Anthony Ha

Amazon plans to expand Whole Foods, New Year's fireworks go green in Taipei and we look back at 2018's biggest tech headlines. Here's your Daily Crunch for December 31, 2018.

1. Report: Amazon is planning a Whole Foods expansion to benefit Prime Now

According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, the goal is to put more customers within range of Amazon's Prime Now service.

Currently, Prime Now offers two-hour delivery in more than 60 U.S. cities, and 30-minute-plus grocery pickup in nearly 30 cities. Amazon is reportedly planning to expand those services to almost all its 475 Whole Foods stores.

2. A look inside the Taipei 101 New Year's Eve fireworks show as it goes green

As one of the tallest LEED-certified buildings, Taipei 101 often serves as a case study for how landmark skyscrapers can reduce their carbon footprint, and it has been taking steps to reduce pollution from the fireworks show while making sure it's still a spectacle.

3. MIT researchers are now 3D printing glass

The system uses a closed, heated box that holds the melted glass and another thermally controlled box where it prints the object, producing clear glass structures that can be used for decoration or building.

4. Here's how to play a game from Black Mirror's Bandersnatch episode

If you've gone down the rabbit hole with Netflix's latest Black Mirror release, here's a fun online Easter egg.

Editor's Pick: The Smartest Tech Products of 2018

Rob Enderle
Dec 31, 2018 5:00 AM PT
Picking a product of the year is anything but trivial because the products I cover every week range from headphones to laptops to books, cars and more. So, I thought I'd try something different this year and pick six products that each deserve the title and then name a winner that stands out from the rest. This allows me to simplify the task and get around a bit of a writer's block I've been having on this subject. [More...]

6 E-Commerce Shipping Strategies That Level the Playing Field for SMBs
E-commerce continues to become more competitive as large companies like Amazon, Target and Walmart soak up market share and customer attention. Shipping window expectations have become shorter, and many online retailers struggle to keep up, particularly SMBs. How can SMBs compete? Not only is competing possible, there are many SMBs that have been finding exceptional success. [More...]
Is Weak Data Integrity Foiling Your CRM?
American companies spend an enormous amount of money on training. Spending reached more than $90 billion in 2017, an increase of over 32 percent from 2016. It's unlikely that even a small share of the billions spent on training last year were devoted to educating and motivating employees to regularly and accurately input data into a company's CRM. Maybe it should have been. [More...]
The Do's and Don'ts of Designing a Great Digital UX
In tech parlance, the emotional result of a person's interaction with a website or digital app is called "user experience" or "UX" -- and the success of a business depends on it. Users who have easy, positive experiences with websites and apps likely will be drawn back to the business. On the contrary, websites and apps with poor navigation and slow loading times likely will turn off consumers. [More...]

What People With Disabilities Want Etailers to Know About Their Online Shopping Experience
Many shoppers would be just fine if they could never set foot in a retail store again. After all, everything is available online: books, groceries, pizza, household necessities, even big ticket items like mattresses and cars. However, 15 percent of people worldwide have a disability that affects their daily life, and many retailers are unaware that their websites are not always accessible to them. [More...]

It's Time to Take a Hard Look at Healthcare Cloud Security
The healthcare cloud has been growing incredibly, becoming an ever-more-
important element of health information technology, or HIT. There are
many reasons why the HIT cloud has been becoming more prominent, such as
research and development and collaboration. Since the cloud has been
expanding so rapidly, this may be a good time to reconsider security.

4. 'DNA Printing' in the Cloud, Part 2
In DNA printing, genetic code becomes computer code. This occurs when
the chemical bases adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine present in a
chemical mix or gene sequence are translated by computer through gel
electrophoresis technology into their representative letters: A/T, T/A,
C/G, G/C. This alphabet code was formalized in 1970 by the International
Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

2018: The Year of Fighting for Positive Change
When I think of corporate responsibility, one company tends to float to
the top, and that is Cisco. With massive efforts to train people all
over the world in the critical networking skills needed to secure and
expand global communications, Cisco has been taking a major chunk out of
joblessness. It has invested millions to reduce homelessness near its
headquarters, for example.

5 Ways to Make Your Website Gen-Z Friendlier
Generation Z is getting a lot of attention these days, as the cohort is
expected to outpace millennials, and comprise 32 percent of the world's
7.7 billion population. This powerful group of consumers was born into a
digital world. A much-reported claim is that Generation Z has an
attention span of 8 seconds. It may seem that your website should mirror
this lightning-quick attention span.

Larry Ellison joins the Tesla board

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28 2018 By Anthony Ha

Tesla names new board members, Tumblr is back in Indonesia and Reid Hoffman faces scrutiny for funding election-related disinformation. Here's your Daily Crunch for December 28, 2018.

1. Tesla names Oracle's Larry Ellison, Walgreens executive to board as part of SEC settlement

Tesla has added two independent directors to its board: Oracle founder, chairman and CTO Larry Ellison and Walgreens executive Kathleen Wilson-Thompson, as part of a settlement with U.S. securities regulators over CEO Elon Musk's infamous tweets about taking the company private.

Ellison isn't just a Tesla believer, he's also a friend and ally of Musk. Ellison came to the Tesla CEO's defense during an analyst meeting in October and disclosed that Tesla is his second-largest investment.

2. Indonesia unblocks Tumblr following its ban on adult content

Tumblr (which, like TechCrunch, is owned by Verizon Media Group) announced earlier this month that it would remove all "adult content" from its platform. That decision, which angered many, was a response to Apple removing Tumblr's app from the iOS Store after child pornography was found within the service.

3. Reid Hoffman denies direct knowledge of funding disinformation in the Alabama Senate race

One of Silicon Valley's prominent billionaires is in hot water after funding deceptive social media campaigns with echoes of Russia's own political playbook. Hoffman said he's sorry — but he also maintains that he didn't know where his money ended up.

4. Grab raises fundraising target to $5B as Southeast Asia's ride-hailing war heats up

The company, which acquired Uber's Southeast Asian business earlier this year, is planning to raise as much as $5 billion from its ongoing Series H round, up from an original target of $3 billion, a source told TechCrunch.

5. Smart speakers hit critical mass in 2018

According to a series of reports from RBC Capital Markets analysts released in December, the near doubling of the adoption rate for smart speakers in the U.S. was driven by growth in both Alexa and Google Home devices, while Apple's HomePod played only a small role.

6. Cap table management tool Carta valued at $800M with new funding

Founded in 2012 by Henry Ward, the Palo Alto-based company plans to use the latest investment to develop its transfer agent and equity administration products so that it can better support startups transitioning into public companies.
