Today's Story Highlights

Hack of Half a Billion Records Takes Shine Off Yahoo's Data Trove
Yahoo on Thursday disclosed that a data breach in late 2014 resulted in
the theft of information from at least 500 million customer accounts. It
appears that state-sponsored hackers carried out the attack, the company
said. Account information compromised includes names, email addresses,
telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords, and security
questions and answers.

Samsung Green-Lights Galaxy Note7 Replacements
In an update to its Galaxy Note7 recall, Samsung announced that more
than 500,000 new replacement devices would be available for exchange at
U.S. retail outlets on Wednesday. The company also announced the rollout
of a software update that will display a green battery icon on the
screens of new Note7 devices to distinguish them from those subject to
recall.

Work in a New Automation Era
Automation has a habit of killing jobs, which has been true since the
Industrial Revolution. However, it seems that we're discovering this
truth all over again. We easily forget when we focus only on the job-
creation aspects of automation, and that usually gets us in trouble.
Since the IR, there have been five distinct economic waves lasting
between 50 and 60 years.

Comcast Takes the Wireless Plunge
CEO Brian Roberts on Tuesday announced that Comcast will enter the
wireless phone market by mid-2017 as a mobile virtual network operator.
A 150-strong Comcast Wireless team, headed by Greg Butz, is "getting
ready next year ... to launch a WiFi and MVNO-integrated product,"
Roberts said at the Goldman Sachs Annual Communacopia Conference in New
York.

Incentives-Driven Disaster: Wells Fargo's Ethical Implosion
Anyone who works with sales people knows that their ultimate incentive
is their commission check. Since the first time that "sales" was
identified as a profession, we've been paying the people who sell based
primarily on their results. This has worked well -- but things are
starting to change. The drive for results at the expense of all other
considerations is running smack dab into new realities.

Oracle Snags Palerra to Beef Up Cloud Security
Oracle has agreed to buy cloud access security broker Palerra, whose
LORIC software manages security and compliance for applications,
workloads, and sensitive data stored across cloud services. Palerra
"offers a unique combination of visibility into cloud usage, data
security, user behavior analytics and security configurations, with
automated incident responses," wrote Oracle SVP Peter Barker.

Samsung Troubles Deepen Following Formal CPSC Action
The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Samsung last week announced a
formal voluntary recall of about 1 million Galaxy Note7 smartphones,
after the high-end flagship device was found to have overheated or
caught fire in at least 92 incidents. Samsung was notified of 26 cases
of people being burned by the defective 5.7-inch smartphones and 55
cases of property damage, according to the CPSC.

Oracle Does the Cloud Dance
Sunday's Oracle OpenWorld keynotes were good -- especially compared with
prior years -- but they still suffered from the perennial problem of
trying to stuff too much content into a two-hour event. Diane Bryant,
SVP at Intel and a big Oracle partner, spent an hour covering a very
broad landscape. Perhaps the most interesting information in Bryant's
presentation concerned Intel's new line of chips.

Pandora Plus Trades Ad Views for Extra Features
Pandora on Thursday launched Pandora Plus, a replacement for its $5-a-
month Pandora One streaming music service. The 4 million Pandora One
subscribers will be switched over to Plus, which will continue to offer
ad-free listening at the same price. However, Pandora Plus also offers
an opt-in video advertising feature that lets users skip or replay
songs. Plus also has an offline mode.

Oracle's Earnings Call
Oracle is flying high as it goes into its annual Oracle OpenWorld
customer conference, based on the news from its earnings call on
Thursday. It's clear that the company has succeeded in pivoting from on-
premises to cloud software offerings. The revenue acceleration from
cloud products and services suggests that Oracle will derive an
increasing share of its future revenues from cloud solutions.

Google Pursues Both Fiber and Wireless Broadband Ambitions
Google Fiber is reaching its tentacles into North Carolina's Research
Triangle, a move that seems to contradict the gloom-and-doom rumors of
layoffs and low consumer interest. The Triangle is Google Fiber's eighth
incursion. It's already available in Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Charlotte,
North Carolina; Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri; Nashville, Tennessee;
Provo, Utah; and Salt Lake City.
