What to expect from Apple's event tomorrow Tomorrow is Apple Event Day, and it's the big fall event where we typically see new iPhones announced, which means it's a black hole into which all other tech news for the day and even the surrounding week inevitably falls. Early reports suggest the new iPhone will kill the ubiquitous 3.5mm headphone jack, and greatly improve the camera, as well as add a degree of waterproofing. All will be revealed in a little over 24 hours. 
2. Intel buys Google's computer vision partner Intel's making a big play to be a leader in computer vision, and as part of that mission it announced it has acquired Movidius, the startup that helped bring Google's Project Tango to life. If Tango-style 3D space sensing capabilities become a standard feature on smartphones of the future, that could help Intel become a key supplier, and potentially as important as players like Qualcomm have been to the smartphone revolution in whatever comes next. 3. Putting a price tag on Samsung's Note 7 recall It always feels weird noting that $1 billion isn't a lot of money, but it really isn't all that much for Samsung – especially when compared with the potential overall cost of brand damage resulting from the ongoing Note 7 incident. Sammy had to call back all Note 7 devices after a few incidents where the device's battery exploded, and it's clearly trying to do everything it can to minimize any tarnish to the brand. 4. The Airbnb for food? Food is a weird thing to Airbnb-ize, but European startup VizEat just raised a good chunk of cash to help it continue to do just that. The platform connects travelers (or anyone who's hungry, really) with locals who are willing to cook meals for them, with the aim of providing a more culturally authentic local dining experience. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, I'd be happy to prepare a traditional meal of pizza pockets and instant ramen for you, by the way. 5. Apple makes Apple Music more personal Apple isn't waiting for tomorrow's event to roll out new features for Apple Music – at least for OS Beta users. New personalized playlists went live to Music subscribers on both iOS and macOS. The new playlists include a Discovery Mix and My New Music Mix, which seem aimed directly at competing with Spotify. Honestly any additional personalization improvements should help. 6. Volvo and Autoliv team up on a new company dedicated to autonomous driving software Volvo is doing everything it can to help get ahead of the competition in the autonomous vehicle race, including teaming up with Uber in a $300 million deal. Now, it's also creating an entirely new joint venture with Autoliv, one of the leading providers of active safety tech for car makers worldwide. |
