All that and more in The Daily Crunch for September 13, 2016. 1. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus reviews are in The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus reviews hit the web this morning, and they mostly praise the new smartphone, but there's a through line that's interesting, too – these feel like a preparatory step for a future yet to come. It's an interesting reaction for an iPhone, and one that could result in some hold-out buyers willing to wait for that future to arrive. 2. Apple's AirPod headphones also focus on the future The Apple AirPods give iPhone owners a completely wireless listening option, but one of the more interesting things about them might be their effectiveness as an input device. Matthew found that they work best when taking voice commands for Siri – but this is another way where Apple's innovations might still need a few more years to get Siri-ous, because it's weird to talk aloud to nothing all the time. 3. A different kind of Bezos chart Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin isn't being shy about sizing up its new rocket to the competition. The space-focused company revealed its "New Glenn" rocket yesterday, and this one can actually break out into orbit, and transport both goods and humans, unlike its existing New Shepard rock, which basically just goes up and down at suborbital heights. 4. Facebook acknowledges it made a mistake with 'napalm girl' photo deletion Facebook really screwed up by deleting the iconic "napalm girl" journalistic photo from the Vietnam War, and now it's acknowledging that it did. The company's COO, Sheryl Sandberg, penned a letter to Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg owning up to the mistake, and blaming a filtration system that has to deal with screening millions of posts daily. 5. Razer's new venture fund sounds like an acquisition farm Razor's new zVentures fund launched at Disrupt yesterday, and the $30 million initial fund is looking at IoT, analysts, VR and AR, as well as robotics and Android mobile games initially. The gaming hardware and peripheral company is probably going to use this as a pipeline for acquisition targets, to help it continue to reach new audiences. 6. Where did go90 go? Verizon has a streaming video app called go90 – this might very well be news to you, even though it's actually been around for quite a while. The app came up during an interview with Verizon's EVP Marni Walden, and a poll of the audience found that basically no one was using it – Walden said this is partly because Disrupt's audience isn't the app's target, but I don't see much mention of go90 anywhere, frankly. 7. Europe court will weigh whether FB privacy suit can become a class action Facebook will face a ruling from the CJEU about an ongoing lawsuit filed in 2014 claiming Facebook violates user privacy. Now suit filer Max Schrems will try to make the suit a legitimate class action by appealing to the EU's highest court, as there are already thousands of North American users signed up to join when they officially can. |
