Apple announces a whole bunch of new stuff, Udacity launches free career courses and scooter startups raise big funding rounds (maybe). All that and more in The Daily Crunch for June 5, 2018. 1. Apple unveils a new set of 'digital wellness' features for better managing screen time This isn't a surprise, but it still feels significant that Apple is giving iOS users new features to monitor how much time they spend on their devices and apps. For example, you'll be able to configure your phone so that notifications don't show up when the phone is on Do Not Disturb mode. So if you wake up in the middle of the night and pick up your phone to check the time, you won't immediately be bombarded with a whole bunch of messages from coworkers and friends. 2. 14 big announcements from Apple's annual developer conference WWDC 2018 What else did Apple announce yesterday? Improvements to augmented reality, personalized Animojis (called Memojis) the next version of macOS and more. 3. Udacity and Google launch free career courses for interview prep, resume writing and more The free career courses will focus on helping employees improve their chances of getting a job, no matter whether we're talking about a first job or a mid-career course change. 4. ASUS' new ZenBook Pro features a 5.5-inch touchscreen instead of a touchpad ASUS says the ZenBook Pro 15 was designed with three kinds of professionals in mind: video makers, photographers and 3D designers. 5. Scooter startup Lime is reportedly raising $250M led by Uber investor GV It's scooters all the way down today, with Lime reportedly raising $250 million in a funding. A new Delaware filing indicated that competitor Bird has authorized the sale of up to $200 million in shares. 6. Grab drivers in Southeast Asia are now convenience stores, too The ride-hailing company, which bought out rival Uber's Southeast Asia business earlier this year, has teamed up with U.S. startup Cargo to sell a selection of items to passengers during their ride. 7. Casper launches a $35 nap pillow for sleeping on-the-go It's basically a scaled-down version of the regular Casper pillow. |
