| A first glimpse into how deep the problems at Uber go, Tesla gets ready for the Model 3's arrival and iOS 11 puts power back in the hands of the people. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for June 7, 2017. 1. Uber's probe into harassment claims results in 20 dismissals – so far Uber's investigation into workplace harassment claims made by former employees has already resulted in 20 terminations, and that's likely no the end. Investigations into at least 215 employees resulted in the dismissals so far – yes, that's a roughly 10 percent hit rate. The investigation continues, led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, with findings to be revealed next week. It's likely that it's going to get worse before it gets better, despite Uber attempting some high profile hires to stem counter the bad news. 
2. Tesla says Model 3 will have limited configuration options at first Early customers will basically only be able to choose the color and wheel size of their Model 3, since the company is limiting configuration options for the first available vehicles in order to help make sure manufacturing goes smoothly. Also, the first production vehicles should start being delivered next month, as planned. 3. iOS 11 hands back location privacy control to users Options for location privacy aren't great currently in iOS with certain apps – to work, they'll require you to share your location information even when the app's not running – Uber does this, for instance. In iOS 11, however, there's an option that forces location access provided only while using the app, regardless of what a developer wants to require. Good job, Apple. 4. Planet of the Apps is not good Apple has a new show (yes, like a TV show) and it's on Apple Music (?) right now. The first episode is also available free online, so you can check it out and realize why you never need to subscribe to Apple Music to get the rest. It's like a very weird, bad version of Shark Tank – almost a Tim & Eric-style parody in its awkwardness, but not funny. 5. Delphi and Transdev want to bring autonomous transport to cities by 2019 We hear a lot about automakers partnering on development of autonomous vehicles, but this might be more interesting in terms of actually getting driverless mobility services on the road: Delphi is bringing its autonomous tech expertise to bear with Transdev, a world leader in operating existing city transit options, including airport shuttles, streetcars and more. 6. SpaceX will launch the Air Force's mysterious spaceplane SpaceX will get a chance to launch he X-37B, a spaceplane operated by the USAF that carries secret payloads to space for orbital missions. It's a big get for SpaceX, since usually the ULA handles X-37B launches. 7. Coursera raises $64M at near-Unicorn valuation Online education startup is close to earning its horn: The startup raised a $64 million round at a valuation of $800 million, which should help you realize that online school is a big thing these days. |
