| The Xbox One X lands, bringing true 4K gaming and a sleeker design to Microsoft's console. Also, Uber gets the Holder report and it's probably going to mean a lot of corporate shakeup at the company. That and more in The Daily Crunch for June 12, 2017. 1. Microsoft's Xbox One X boasts 4K, a name that looks like a typo Xbox One X sounds like a verbal stutter when said out loud, but it's the real name of Project Scorpio, Microsoft's long-touted 4K video game console upgrade of the One X. 4K HDR output is the headline feature, and it'll do true 4K for games that support it. It'll also do Dolby Atmos surround sound, and it's way smaller than previous Xbox One hardware. All pretty cool, but it's also $500. 
2. Uber's board votes to adopt all recommendations in the Holder report Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's investigation into Uber's workplace issues is complete, and he's presented his recommendations to Uber's board. The board has approved all recommendations submitted in the report, we learned yesterday, but we won't know in full what those recommendations are until Tuesday, when they're presented to the company's entire employee base. 3. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick discussing leave of absence with board It's unclear if this is tied specifically to a recommendation in the Holder report, but Travis Kalanick could be stepping back from the company for a while, and he apparently has been discussing this possibility with the board. Co-founder Garrett Camp could step in to lead in his absence. 4. Lyft signs Jaguar Land Rover on as a new partner Meanwhile Jaguar Land Rover is now partnered up with Lyft, via a $25 million portion of their most recent $600 million round, and an agreement to work on autonomous vehicle technology commercialization together. It's yet another high profile partner for Lyft in autonomy, as that group of collaborators continues to grow. 5. Snap working on Spectacles 2.0 Snap is working on a new version of its Spectacles hardware, and this time around those could include augmented reality. That sounds like it could be good, provided they can make sure they still basically just look like sunglasses. 6. Andy Rubin's Essential phone really isn't going to work out Look, it's a very cool design and the few people who know the Rubin name well enough to understand what he did for Android and smartphones will probably pick this up regardless, but news that it's a carrier exclusive with Sprint basically means this thing will be DOA in terms of any chance of making a dent in the business of large incumbents. 7. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro is ready for iOS 11 Apple's iPad Pro with 10.5-inch display is a great iPad, but it's just waiting for iOS 11 to unlock it's true potential. Once that arrives, however, Matthew thinks it'll finally achieve the goal of becoming a true notebook computer replacement. |
