THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12 2017 By Anthony Ha

Apple announces a release date for the iMac Pro, Google launches new photo apps and Nintendo shares some Switch sales numbers. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for December 12, 2017. Also: The new Star Wars movie is really good.

1. Apple's iMac Pro arrives December 14

Despite months of silence since the initial announcement at WWDC, it looks like Apple is going to make good on its promise to deliver the new iMac Pro in December.

Pricing starts at $4,999 and includes up to an 18-core Xeon processor, 128GB of memory and 4TB of storage. My colleague Brian Heater says this is "a pretty serious piece of machinery."

2. 'The Last Jedi' is the most moving Star Wars movie — and the funniest

I've seen the new Star Wars, and I have to say it: This is the best one since The Empire Strikes Back.

3. Google launches three new photography apps for testing experimental technology

This is part of a new series of what Google calls photography "appsperiments." (Get it?)

4. Nintendo sells 10 million Switch consoles since launch

The console launched back in March, and is selling at a similar pace to Nintendo's previous hardware superstar, the Wii.

5. Ed Lee, SF mayor who had a close relationship with the tech world, has died aged 65

As mayor of San Francisco, Lee made many efforts to bring the city's technology industry closer together with its civic life, both through initiatives of his own, and through partnerships with folks like Ron Conway.

6. Apple GymKit is coming to a treadmill near you

Unveiled at WWDC over the summer, the platform is designed to make wearing an Apple Watch a more seamless experience.

7. Descript gets $5M to make sound editing like a word document

This is the new startup from former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason.
