| iPhone X tops the smartphone crowd in display quality, Apple has its cash on a lonely island, and Tesla takes a supplier in-house to help its automated manufacturing capabilities. It's The Daily Crunch for November 7, 2017. 1. iPhone X gets top marks in display, high grade on camera Testing done by independent analyst firms can raise doubts for all kinds of legit reasons, but they still do provide some kind of relative measure for consumers to go by when making purchase choices. DsiplayMate gave the iPhone display its top marks ever for a smartphone screen, DxOMark has said the camera is top in terms of stills, but the Pixel 2 still exceeds it in certain tests based on their metrics. Again, you might not necessarily trust their testing process, but based on lived experience, these reflect real world conditions. 
2. Apple put its billions on an island Apple got dinged for hoarding cash in Ireland to avoid paying taxes on it, by the EU. So the company up and moved its coffers closer to the island of Jersey, near Normandy, which ordinarily doesn't tax companies. 3. Tesla acquires automated manufacturing supplier Tesla is in "production hell" with the Model 3, per Elon Musk himself. The car features one of the most highly automated vehicle production lines ever created, so it makes sense that acquiring a company specializing in automated manufacturing would help the automaker escape hell's fiery environs. 4. Renault demonstrates its own self-driving tech Americans might not be that familiar with Renault, but the French automaker is still working on the latest and greatest in the automotive field, including self-driving tech, and TechCrunch had a chance to see it in person. 5. Tesla's big truck is getting official on November 16 Tesla will finally show its new electric semi truck to the world next week. It'll probably look super awesome, that's basically a given, but what about range? Autonomy? Giant infotainment displays? We'll learn all this and more, hopefully. 6. Comcast had a major issue yesterday This knocked out a lot of the Internet for a lot of people. A brief, blissful break. 7. Waymo is testing self-driving cars on roads without safety drivers Waymo announced a major milestone today – the former Google self-driving car project is now testing its vehicles on public roads in Chandler, Arizona, with absolutely no one behind the wheel. They say this means they've achieved full Level 4 autonomy for the area, and will open this up to its pilot for members of the public soon. |
