Toyota builds a robot you can sort of virtually wear, the Kindle turns 10 and Bitcoin passes a new value milestone. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for November 21, 2017. 1. Toyota's latest robot looks like a clear vision of the future Toyota's new T-HR3 is not only named like an adorable Star Wars droid – it look like one, too. The humanoid bot is extremely articulate, right down to its five fingers and knuckles. The robot can also be remotely controlled by a human wearing sensor-laden gloves and boots, who can see through the robot's virtual eyes using a VR display. That's one way to work remotely. 2. The Kindle is 10 and here's a look back at its history Amazon's Kindle turned 10 yesterday, and it's come a long way in that decade. The first one is now a piece of industrial design worthy of an entire book-length project on its design inspiration alone. 3. Bitcoin passes $8,000 Cryptocurrency, what can you say? No, honestly I'm asking – I don't understand this area and all and I never have. But Fitz gets it so go read him. 4. Baidu teams up with NIO on to invest in upscale Chinese car booking app The car hailing wars are coming, and Chinese internet giant Baidu and electric vehicle startup NIO want in on the action. Didi had better watch the throne. 5. HopSkipDrive raises $7.4 million HopSkipDrive is also riding the ride hailing wave, with a bet that parents don't trust their kids to Uber and Lyft (plus, it's against the companies' terms of service anyway). The company fills a niche need, but it could be a growing opportunity with the direction the car market is headed. 6. Amazon's Kindle Oasis is the culmination of a decade's work There's something to be said for slow and steady product refinement, and the Kindle Oasis (new version for 2017) is a great example of that. Amazon's decade of Kindle culminates in this class-leading e-reader. 7. TechCrunch's 2017 Gift Guide is live Buying gifts is hard, but it doesn't have to be: We're here to help. This year's gift guide is now out there for you to peruse, just in time for holiday sales. It's going to keep growing, too, so check back in regularly. |
