SpaceX has succeeded in putting the first pieces of its internet plan into space SpaceX has launched two satellites that will eventually form the groundwork for a 12,000-satellite constellation that will beam affordable broadband internet to customers globally who aren't currently well-served. The plan, which would expand SpaceX's revenue models, could help it raise more money to pursue its more ambitious, long-term goals, including building rockets that can reach Mars and beyond.

FCC's new rules destroying internet freedom go live Net neutrality regulations are good not bad, but the current FCC chairman doesn't give a shit and his garbage new rules have just been made official. Time for the fight to begin again. 3. Lighthouse's AI security camera uses autonomous driving smarts Startup Lighthouse is using the vision smarts being developed and employed for self-driving cars to power its AI smart home security camera. You can issue natural language voice commands to the gadget to have it retrieve info from a specific point in time or keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. 4. Anchor's new app wants to be a one-stop podcasting destination Anchor is an app for broadcasting audio, which has tried really hard to make stackable audio a thing. Now it's basically reimagining itself as a podcast app, with an emphasis on creators. It's probably not going to work, tbh. And I say that as someone who loves podcasts. 5. Glossier closes $52 million in new funding Beauty startup and consumer goods company Glossier has closed a fresh round of $52 million in funding, led by IVP and Index Ventures. Glossier is doing big business, and it's probably just going to keep growing or get picked up by one fo the huge CPG companies out there. 6. Ford names a new North American president Ford's moving quickly to replace outgoing North American president and former CTO Raj Nair. Nair was pushed out because of behavior that ran afoul of its code of conduct, though we don't know what that is. The new North American president, Kumar Galhotra, is another longtime Ford employee. 7. SpaceX nearly caught its Falcon 9 fairing SpaceX's next step in its reusable rocket plan is to catch a falling star – or a falling fairing, rather. It's the part of the rocket that protects the precious cargo on board, and it costs a pretty penny to make a new one each time. This time, it was a near miss, but next time SpaceX might get lucky. |
