Toyota makes a big investment in Uber. It's The Daily Crunch.

Toyota partners with Uber, Huawei overtakes Apple and Donald Trump is tweeting again. Here's your Daily Crunch for August 28, 2018.

1. Toyota invests $500M into Uber

Toyota and Uber are partnering to bring an on-demand autonomous ride-hailing service to market.

The deal is unusual because a third — and so far unnamed — fleet operator would own and operate the mass-produced autonomous vehicles. Pilot-scale deployments will begin on the Uber ride-hailing network in 2021, the companies said.

2. Huawei bags Apple's 2nd place spot in global smartphone sales: Gartner

Another analyst has Huawei overtaking Apple in the global smartphone rankings for the second quarter this year. Overall, Gartner says sales of smartphones to end users grew 2 percent in the quarter, to reach 374 million units.

3. Trump rage-tweets Google alleging search 'bias'

4. AutoX is using its self-driving vehicles to deliver groceries

The pilot will initially be limited to an area of about 400 homes in north San Jose. Eventually, AutoX aims to expand the pilot west to Mountain View and Palo Alto, with more delivery partners joining soon.

5. Google Go search app for emerging markets can now read out website content

The U.S. firm introduced Google Go last year. This new feature is designed to increase its appeal across India, particularly for non-English audiences.

6. Amazon's children's book subscription 'Prime Book Box' opens to all in the U.S.

The $22.99 per box offering ships Prime members in the U.S. a curated selection of kids' books every one, two or three months, at up to 35 percent off the list price, Amazon says. The service was first launched in May, but was only available on an invite-only basis at that time.

7. China's Byton is sending its electric SUV prototypes to the U.S.

Byton, the new China-based automaker founded by former BMW and Infiniti executives, has produced the first 10 prototypes of its tech-centric all-electric SUV and some of them will be in the U.S. before the end of the year, according to the company's president and co-founder Daniel Kirchert.
