Apple makes a $600M chip deal.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11 2018 By Anthony Ha

Apple signs an extensive deal with a European chipmaker, James Murdoch may or may not lead the Tesla board and a teeth-straightening startup is valued at $3.2 billion. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 11, 2018.

1. Apple inks $600M deal to license IP, acquire assets and talent from Dialog to expand chipmaking in Europe

Apple has been working with Dialog since the first iPhone — and although Dialog is describing this as an asset transfer and licensing deal, it's also Apple's biggest acquisition by far in terms of people, with 300 people joining from Dialog.

The deal price includes $300 million in cash, plus a $300 million commitment to make purchases from Dialog's remaining business.

2. Elon Musk hits back: James Murdoch is not the lead candidate for Tesla chairman spot

A Financial Times article had reported 21st Century Fox CEO and Tesla board member James Murdoch was the lead candidate to take Musk's chairman spot. Musk tweeted that the story was "incorrect."

3. Teeth-straightening startup SmileDirectClub is now worth $3.2 billion

That valuation came as part of a new $380 million round of funding.

4. Sarah Friar, long the CFO of Square, is leaving to join the social network Nextdoor as its CEO

Nextdoor, a social network that centers on neighborhoods, announced three months ago that co-founder and outgoing chief executive Nirav Tolia planned to step aside as soon as he found the right person to take Nextdoor "to the next level."

5. Apple has acquired Spektral, a Danish computer vision startup, for augmented reality technology

Multiple Apple acquisitions in one day? Sort of — while the news only leaked out yesterday, it looks like the deal actually happened a while back.

6. Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman announce the name of their stealthy mobile video startup

It's called Quibi, short for "quick bites." Which is ... fine, I guess? More impressively, the company's signed up filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, "Southpaw" director Antoine Fuqua and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi, as well as "Get Out" producer Jason Blum.

7. Microsoft adds 60,000 patents to the Open Invention Network

Microsoft announced that it's joined open-source patent group Open Invention Network in an effort to help shield Linux and other open-source software from patent-related suits. As part of the deal, the software giant is opening a library of 60,000 patents to OIN members.
