Spotify gets a makeover

THE DAILY CRUNCH
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 2018 By Anthony Ha

Spotify's Premium app gets less cluttered, Essential announces major layoffs and we go inside Facebook's election security war room. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 18, 2018.

1. Spotify's Premium app gets a big makeover

The most noticeable change is the navigation. There are now just three main navigation buttons — Home, Search and My Library. The Radio service has also been revamped to incorporate the new Artist Radio Playlists.

Overall, the changes make the app feel less cluttered, and offer a new way to create personalized playlists.

2. Essential lays off nearly one-third of its staff

Hardware is hard — even when you've got the talent and experience to back it up.

3. Silicon Valley hoped the Khashoggi story would go away; instead, it may end an era

"End of era" might sound hyperbolic, but Connie Loizos argues that the controversy could ultimately cause the Valley's long economic boom to bust.

4. Twitter makes it easier to see enforcement taken on reported tweets

For example, the company is making it more transparent to users whether a deleted tweet was deleted by the user or because Twitter took an action.

5. Take a video tour of Facebook's election security war room

In this video, TechCrunch takes you inside the war room at Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters, where screens visualize influxes of foreign political content and voter suppression attempts.

6. Sick of managing your Airbnb? Vacasa raises $64M to do it for you

Vacasa equips owners with full-service vacation home management, including listings on top rental platforms like Airbnb and HomeAway, as well as local cleaners who come by between guest visits.

7. Banksy's rigged art frame was supposed to shred the whole thing

At least, that's what the artist claimed via a "director's cut" video posted to his YouTube channel.
