Snapchat CEO memo leaks. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 2018 By Anthony Ha

Snapchat's Evan Spiegel has a comeback plan, controversy erupts over Bloomberg's spy chip story and Samsung predicts record profits. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 5, 2018.

1. Nine highlights from Snapchat CEO's 6000-word leaked memo on survival

Adults, not teens. Messaging, not Stories. Developing markets, not the United States. That's how Snapchat will make a comeback, according to CEO Evan Spiegel.

"The biggest mistake we made with our redesign was compromising our core product value of being the fastest way to communicate," Spiegel said in a leaked memo from late September.

2. Bloomberg's spy chip story reveals the murky world of national security reporting

This week's bombshell story has the internet split: Either the story is right, and reporters have uncovered one of the largest and jarring breaches of the U.S. tech industry by a foreign adversary… or it's not, and a lot of people screwed up.

3. Samsung forecasts record $15.5B profit thanks to chips not smartphones

Samsung's last quarter of business saw its slowest growth of profits in a year thanks to weak sales of its flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone. But the company is about much more than just phones, and that's why it's forecasting a record operating profit of nearly $15.5 billion for its upcoming Q3 results.

4. Instagram prototypes handing your location history to Facebook

That means your exact GPS coordinates collected by Instagram, even when you're not using the app, could help Facebook target you with ads and recommend relevant content.

5. Mars Rover Curiosity is switching brains so it can fix itself

When you send something to space, it's good to have redundancy.

6. Siilo injects $5.1M to try to transplant WhatsApp use in hospitals

Siilo has been carving a niche for itself over the past 2.5 years, via a free-at-the-point-of-use encrypted messaging app that's intended for medical professions to securely collaborate on patient care.

7. BuildInk is the winner of Startup Battlefield MENA 2018

Sorry for the automated emails earlier this week (and thanks to Taylor Nakagawa for filling in yesterday), but I had a good excuse: I was in Beirut for our first Startup Battlefield MENA! Check out this rundown of the finalists.
