Here's your Daily Crunch for October 16, 2018. 1. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has died at age 65 Vulcan, the privately held company that Allen founded in 1986, released a statement that says it is "with deep sadness that we announce the death of our founder Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and noted technologist, philanthropist, community builder, conservationist, musician and supporter of the arts." His contribution to technology is obvious, but in recent decades, Allen was known for many things, including his love of sports, his love of music, and, relatedly, expensive toys. 2. Google CEO Sundar Pichai speaks publicly for the first time about its censored China search engine Pichai said onstage at the Wired 25 summit that the company is taking "a longer-term view" of China. Even though Project Dragonfly follows China's strict censorship laws, Pichai claimed that it will still be able to answer "well over 99 percent of the queries" put to it. 3. Lyft's $299 subscription plan is launching to the masses The All-Access plan costs $299 per month for 30 rides of up to $15 each. If your ride goes over $15, you just pay the difference. All other rides that month after the initial 30 are discounted 5 percent. 4. The new Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and waterproof The workhorse of the company's devoted e-reader line just got a handful of upgrades that will give users a more premium experience, while keeping the device's starting price at $130. 5. Twilio acquires email API platform SendGrid for $2 billion in stock This is Twilio's largest acquisition to date, but it makes a lot of sense given that both companies aim to make communications platforms easier for developers to build. 6.
