Netflix growth is back on track

Netflix growth exceeds expectations, a blockchain media startup stumbles and YouTube goes down for an hour. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 17, 2018.

1. Netflix shares are up after the streaming service adds nearly 7M new subscribers in Q3

Netflix is back in Wall Street's good graces. Its Q3 subscriber growth came in way ahead of expectations, with 6.96 million net additions, bringing it to a total of 137 million members.

By the way, Netflix also says "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" has become one of its most-watched original films.

2. Blockchain media startup Civil is issuing full refunds to all buyers of its cryptocurrency

Civil's initial coin offering, meant to fund the company's effort to create a new economy for journalism using the blockchain, failed to attract sufficient interest. The company announced that it would provide refunds to all CVL token buyers by October 29.

3. YouTube experiences a major outage lasting for more than an hour

That's an eternity in internet time.

4. Google tweaks Android licensing terms in Europe to allow Google app unbundling — for a fee

The company says it's making these changes to comply with a major European antitrust ruling this summer.

5. Skydio's autonomous drone lands in Apple retail stores, now supports Watch controls

With a few taps, you can now direct Skydio's $1,999 autonomous drone from your Apple Watch.

6. Twitter opens archive of 4,500 accounts related to Russia and Iran's political propaganda

While Twitter had revealed the account numbers previously, this is the first time that it's unveiling actual tweets.

7. Smule raises $20M, with plans to expand India operations

App maker turned music social network Smule has raised another round of funding, following a $54 million raise led by Tencent in May of last year.
